QUIAPO CHURCH DECLARED ARCHDIOCESAN SHRINE

The Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, popularly known as Quiapo Church, has been officially elevated to an archdiocesan shrine by Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula, the Church announced on Wednesday.

Based on a Decree of Erection dated May 10, 2023, the cardinal approved the petition to have Quiapo Church declared the “Archdiocesan Shrine of the Black Nazarene.”

“By these presents, We hereby decree that the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene - St. John the Baptist Parish (Quiapo Church), be conferred the title of the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Black Nazarene,” the decree read.

The petition was made by the rector and parish priest, Rev. Fr. Rufino Sescon, Jr., and the Quiapo Church community. It was then consulted with the Presbyteral Council, or council of priests.

With the decree, Quiapo Church has been granted “all the rights and privileges as embodied in the statutes” and is governed by the provisions of Canons 1230 to 1234 of the Code of Canon Law. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
